The right and power to talk!

Winston supports the journalists' fight for freedom of speech against the Chinese government because, as an aphasia patient, Winston understands what it's like not to be able to talk. He believes everyone is allowed and should be able to get the words out, no matter how you do it. Winston's speech disability has made it hard for him to voice his opinion. He wants everyone to have the right and power to talk.

with Dr. Leora Cherney of Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago

On February 20, 2008, Winston travels to Chicago and met with Dr. Leora Cherney and her support group. Winston demonstrates how he speaks with the use of technological equipments. He shows his interests and concern in protecting the environment and stopping the global warming, followed by a discussion and a Q&A session.

RIC offers a speech treatment to Winston to be done on the internet. The treatment lasts for six weeks. Winston spends 90 minutes a day on the treatment completed in two or three sessions, six days a week. The treatment is conducted by Jaime Lee of the institute, a speech pathologist.

An open letter to Brooke
Thanks Brooke for taking the nice pictures of Winston and your colleagues. After seeing a picture of your lab (with Winston in it of course), Bob Dorr, Winston's friend, decided to send a picture of Autumn, his labrador retriever, to you, cc'd to a few of his friends. Bob is wondering if his lab is just as nice as your lab.

After the class, Winston and Brooke invited three graduate students who specialize in aphasia to come to dinner with them. They went to Casa Nueva, an organic worker-owned restaurant that serves all local food and contracts with many local small businesses for its supplies. Winston was impressed by the sustainability focus of the place, and took photos of the list of small local organic businesses. One of the students, Maria, is from Russia (Moscow). Another, Sabine, is from Germany (Leipzig). The third, Kelsey, is from Las Vegas. Winston has a waiter take pictures of them together there.
